Melanie, I know exactly how you feel. Tonight, a deer hit my car, and it does look like the end of the road for my 1994 Cutlass Supreme SL. Indeed, this is one of the sadder days of my existence, as this vehicle was my best inanimate friend for the past 18 years. In fact, I have likely spent more time with this one being than anything (or anyone) else in my entire life. After traveling together for 272,000 miles, I am not quite sure what the future holds. I was looking so forward to our 20th anniversary on Jan. 8th, 2014, but now I will be forced to spend that occasion with a "something" that I barely know.

At least I still have the window sticker which lists under Installed Options: "Radio-AM/FM Stereo W/Cassette". The tape player, which still works perfectly, has played some of our favorite tunes during many long stretches of lonely highways.

To say I will miss SHUFFLE is somewhat akin to saying that Tony Orlando misses Dawn (both of them).

And tomorrow, the sun will rise....but not on my car, because it will be stuck in the garage.

I think, deep down, we knew it was done already when we were talking about it then, so don't worry about jinxing it! The Omaha Public Library actually subscribes to Consumer Reports online so you can access their stuff with your barcode and PIN but thanks for the offer! I kind of wish I had a little more time to pour over the resources but I think we are going to try to buy today. Wish us luck!

"Eat ..." and "Devil .." were two of the ones that I'd started reading and then for some reason or another never finished. When I heard about the book "Just my Type" (about typography) I figured I should probably finally read "Eat ..." first before making my way to that one. I really, really liked what I read of "Devil ..." so I'm looking forward to finishing it up. I'll let you know what I think of "Guernsey ..."!

You've never read Eats Shotos & Leaves!? Scandal! It was frustrating because the author is British and has a certain sense of what proper grammar should be worldwide, but other than that it was quality.

The Gurney Literary and Potato Peel Society is amazing. Beyond amazing. I think I reviewed it on my blog. I'd love to talk it over after you read it!

The Devil in the White City was a book I hated. The story was so unbalanced ... you'll get what I mean when you read it.

I started reading The History of Love and just ... well ... I couldn't get past the first few pages. :(

I hope you get through these! I should do something similar ... right now I'm reading The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd, and I'm eager to start up When You Catch an Adjective, Kill It!

Another thing I thought of that helps - audiobooks. Since I work two jobs and drive a lot, I also listen to books a lot. 11 of the books on this year's list were audiobooks. The only problem sometimes is whether you like the narrator of the book. There have been a few I've just stopped listening too because I just didn't like the voice reading it.

You're right that being a librarian helps - mostly because I'm surrounded by books and have the opportunity to see so many interesting ones. This ensures that I almost never get to a point where I have nothing to read.
As for finding time to read them, I don't have the best solution other than making time (and if it's a good book, this will be easier to do and you won't even regret staying up until 3 a.m. reading it like I was doing last night).
Finally, never feel like you have to finish a book if you don't like it. It took me a long time to get to this point, but no one is forcing you to read the book (unless, of course, it's for class or a book club). Nancy Pearl, a rock star in the library world, says if you don't like it after the first 50 pages, move on to something you like better which goes back to the other point about if you like it - you'll want to read it faster.
